Herniated Discs

At Whole Health Chiropractic, Dr. Oberti provides patients with safe, effective relief from a number of causes of back pain, including the notorious herniated disc. Also known as a slipped, bulging, or ruptured disc, a herniated disc is an injury in which fluid leaks from the spongy material separating the vertebrae and into the surrounding tissues. While the threat they pose to overall health varies widely, they are nearly always quite painful.

The discs between vertebrae serve an important function in keeping the spine springy, but they wear out over time. When their gel-like fluid pushes through the disc walls, it ends up pressing against other soft tissues. This may be the source of a patient’s back or neck pain, but when leaking fluid presses on nerves, other body parts may be affected, as well. Sciatica is the term used to describe pressure on the sciatic nerve, which can result in incontinence or leg pain, and a herniation in a lumbar disc is one of its most common causes.

The good news is that the body can usually heal herniated discs in about six weeks. However, until then, the best course of action for pain relief is a regimen of adjustments, massage, and therapeutic exercise prescribed by Dr. Oberti. Of course, Dr. Oberti will also conduct an MRI to determine whether a herniated disc is the source of a patient's pain.
